This is the final week of Summer Reading! Be sure to get your tickets in A.S.A.P.! The last day to turn in tickets and redeem prizes is Saturday, August 21st. The library will be open until 1pm.

SS Gigantic, RMS Titanic, and a Whale of Tale!

During my library career, I've discovered kids are fascinated with the intriguing story of the RMS Titanic. The book S.S. Gigantic Across the Atlantic by Peter Selgin, is a perfect companion to the topic. The lighthearted story incorporates elements of the Titanic's story, believed to be unsinkable, icebergs, even the fateful date of April 15th. Our library has a vast collection of children's materials about the Titanic, both fictional and factual.

This week's storytime we learned of the many different types of boats, the bow and stern, and whale watching from boats! Our storytime craft got a bit messy with lots of blue paint (washable of course!)

Sprinkler Day Fun!

Friday, July 16th was our first ever Sprinkler Day! Keeping with the theme of Make a Splash, it was only appropriate to get out the slip and slides for an afternoon of fun! Shark Attack!!!!

Week 3's storytime (Shark Attack!!!) was most likely the best loved storytime of the summer thus far, for the simple reason, everyone loves a good scary shark story! I usually choose stories of varying lengths and complexity based, however this past week, the books were appropriate for all ages!

The older kiddos created their very own shark tooth necklace while the toddlers created a sponge painting of a great white shark.

Our dog therapy birthday bash was a huge success!! Annie, Will and Grace loved the stories, Frosty Paws birthday treat and visiting with all the children. Dog therapy returns next month on August 10. Take a look at all the fun!

Sprinkler Day is coming up! Friday July 16!! Apparently it'll be 93 degrees of sticky hot weather, making it the perfect day for sprinklers! No registration is necessary.

Wyomissing's tradition of celebrating Independence Day continued this week at storytime. The borough's annual 4th of July festivities are always looked upon with great anticipation! Children tend to learn concepts and themes best through repetition and experience. Fourth of July storytime coupled with the exciting festivities the borough offers is sure to create lasting memories. Summer Reading Week 2, We all live in a yellow submarine...

Week #2 of Summer Reading has come and gone! This week's storytime we dove down to the depths of the ocean in a submarine. We couldn't learn about submarines without singing the classic Beatles' song "Yellow Submarine!" We also created portholes displaying the creatures one might discover when peering out of submarine.

Pinkalicious and Twilight, an odd combination I admit, however they are the hottest new additions in our children and teen collections.

Author Victoria Kann has released two new Pinkalicious books, Pinkalicious School Rules! (a beginner reader) and Pinkalicious and the Pink Drink.

Stephanie Meyer has entranced her Twilight fans yet again with The Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella.

The summer reading program is underway! The first week was a flurry of activity with children of all ages anxious to begin their summer reading quest! Our Summer Reading Kickoff event was quite successful with 75 children stopping by for registration, freeze pops, and temporary tattoos on the beautiful library patio. Thanks to all who attended!

On Tuesday, the Yocum Institute for Arts Education came to teach and assist teens in creating mosaic stepping stones to be added to the library grounds. Wyomissing is home to very talented teens!

The storytime theme for week 1 was "Commotion in the Ocean," discussing and learning the many interesting creatures that live in the deep blue sea. A favorite creature is the jellyfish, thus our wispy craft of the boneless wonder.

Some Thoughts on Mother Goose on the Loose

If there is anything concrete I have learned from working with children, and in libraries, everything is trial and error. Our first Mother Goose on the Loose session was certainly that! We had a fantastic turnout! Now knowing the large number of participants, I will purchase more bells, scarves and other props so each child may participate.

Aspects of the program will change, in order to keep it to a maximum of 30 minutes. The first session ran much longer than anticipated. For the sanity of us all, I am determined to keep the program under 30 minutes!

At the suggestions of a few parents, other adaptations will be made to maximize the potential of this program. The primary goal is to strengthen parent and child bonding through interactive rhymes and songs.

A Look Back...And a Peek Forward...

Summer Reading
The 2009 Summer Reading Program was a huge success! We saw a 51% increase in participation versus summer of 2008. Thanks to all the parents who are always encouraging their children to read or reading to them. Literature is the first step toward limitless success!

Storytime

After summer, comes the often difficult task of getting back in a routine. For many families, storytime has become part of their weekly routine. It is so encouraging to see all the smiling faces ready to dive into stories, songs and crafts. I was thrilled to have 31 toddler this past Thursday for storytime! I will continue to work hard in order to create storytimes that both parents and children can enjoy.

Mother Goose on the Loose! (MGOL) Coming this Fall!

Beginning Friday, September 25 at 10am, I will begin this ongoing, nursery rhyme based program. After attending the training session, I knew it was a program I needed to bring to Wyomissing. I was especially drawn to MGOL because it is appropriate for infants and children up to age 5, reaching a wide range of ages.

This award winning program has been implemented in libraries across the nation. What can you expect? The program combines nursery rhymes, music, movement, repetition, positive reinforcement, instruments and books. Click here for more info

More Movies!
Thanks to a grant provided by the Target Corporation, we are able to feature motion pictures. Popcorn is always popping for our movie presentations! Our film for October will be It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Stay tuned for more movies!

Can anyone tell me where the summer went? I can't believe tomorrow is the last day for the summer reading program! Thank you to everyone who participated, from the youngest child to the teens as well as our great library supporters, the parents! Bringing your children to the library to enjoy storytime, check out books and read together, is the foundation for a lifelong love of literature. Special thanks too for choosing our library to create these memories!

For those curious about the Keith Haring book I introduced, the title is I Wish I Didn't Have to Sleep by Keith Haring. It challenges kids to look at artwork and think of all the possibilities of its meaning. Kids love Haring artwork for the cartoon resemblance.

Manners Books for Children

It can be difficult to verbalize with children how to be well mannered in different situations. Thus the addition of a new book series entitled Way to Be, published by Picture Window Books.

Each book in the series depicts positive role models displaying their best manners. Other books about manners use negative connotation such as, "Do NOT do this" or "That is not polite." However this series takes a positive spin.

Each book also features a "fun facts" section and other helpful resources.

Books can be considered picture books for their short text, however they are located in the non-fiction section based on their content.

Below are titles in the series as well as their library call number. Items are currently found on the New Juvenile Bookshelf (located at the children's entrance). In 6 months they will be moved to the regular children's non-fiction section.

Coming Fall 2009

An Early Literacy Program for

Infants and Young Children

An award winning program integrating rhymes, music, movement, repetition, positive reinforcement, nursery rhymes, and books! The program is modeled to aid in developing literacy skills as well as strengthen bonds between care-giver and child.

Program will occur weekly for 30 minutes. it is most beneficial when children experience the program on a weekly basis. Infants and children up to age three are welcome to attend.

*I'm hoping to implement the program on Fridays at 10:00 a.m. I would love to hear some feedback on whether this time will work for families.

Beach Sand Recipe

This week's storytime was a visit to the beach! For the craft, kids created their own sand sculpture. I've had some questions about the recipe, so here it is! This is a great rainy day activity. I recommend doubling the recipe for more than 4 children.

Sand Sculpture Recipe

Ingredients:

3 cups of play sand (can be found at your local hardware store)
1 1/2 cups of cornstarch
1 1/2 cups of water

Directions:

Combine the cornstarch and water in a large pot. Mix until lumps are completely gone.
Add play sand and mix until smooth
Turn the stove top on medium and STIR CONTINUOUSLY. This is very important. If the mixture starts to stick to the bottom of the pan, simply take off of heat for a few seconds and stir. You may need to turn down the heat to low depending on your stove top.
Continue to stir until you can't stir anymore! It should get very thick.
Once the mixture is cooled down, knead a fist full in your hands. It should stick together almost like the consistency of play dough. Enjoy!

It's Children's Book Week from May 11-17th! This is a time to celebrate our favorite books, authors and illustrators! Here are some ways to celebrate at home:

Check out your favorite children's book from when you were a child. Share the nostalgia with your children!

Try a new author. You may be surprised!

Enjoy a Read-a-Thon with your kids! Check out lots of books, bring them home, sprawl out on the floor or sofa and enjoy!

Do you have a "new reader"? Encourage them by reading a book together. They read one page, then you read the next, and so on. This will help eliminate frustrations.

See the newest addition to the family, our New Materials Bookshelf for children and young adults! It was difficult for our patrons to know what materials were new since they weren't differentiated from the rest of our collection. But we have now changed that!

All new (recently ordered) materials for children and young adults can now be easily accessed. Materials have a "NEW" sticker on their spines. The New Materials Bookshelf can be found at the children's entrance (where the book drop is located).

Do you have a book suggestion? Let us know! Perhaps it will find itself a spot on our New Materials Bookshelf!

It's hard to chase after your little ones after storytime AND look for books! If there is a particular book or topic you're interested in, whether it be for your children, or for you, please let me know!

Jot down what you are looking for, and I will do my best to find items for you! The more details you provide, the better our chances are of finding what you need. Simply leave the note at the front desk or hand it to me after storytime.

Miss Corinne's favorite book character is now on Nickelodeon! If your kids love Olivia on TV, they will love the precocious piglet on pages too!

We have lots of Olivia books on our shelves to keep you occupied. All are located in the picture book section (JP FAL). The Olivia series is written by Ian Falconer, renowned artist, costume designer, and illustrator for The New Yorker magazine.

Van Gogh's Birthday Celebration!

We are teaming up with the talented Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts! Our program will include:

a special guest from the institute who will share some fascinating facts about the famous artist
Miss Corinne will share the book Camille and the Sunflowers: a story of Vincent Van Gogh
Sunflower related craft for all to enjoy
Birthday cake of course!

When is storytime?

Below is basic information regarding storytime. Activities and chosen books are planned based on age group. Each storytime lasts between a half hour to 45 minutes.

Many people ask the difference between the Wednesday Preschool Storytime and the Toddler Storytime. The same craft is used, however for the toddlers, all materials are pre-cut.

Preschool / Elementary Storytime Tuesdays @ 4 p.m.

For children 3 to 11 years of age.
These programs are thematic and involve the reading of approximately two books/stories enhanced with puppets, and other props, singing and a craft.

Preschool Storytime Wednesdays @ 10 a.m.

For children 3 to 5 years of age.
These programs are thematic and involve the reading of approximately two books/stories enhanced with puppets, and other props, singing and a craft.

Toddler Storytime Thursdays @ 10 a.m.

For children 18 months to 3 years of age.
These programs are thematic and involve the reading of approximately two stories/books as well as singing, movement, and a craft.

Welcome one and all, to Bookworm's Blog! Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm Miss Corinne, children's librarian for the Wyomissing Public Library. Don't worry though! Miss Colleen is still here! She is now our director of the library. Congratulations Miss Colleen!

This blog will serve as a communication portal for families to find out the most current information regarding our children's services.
